Three Trending Hairstyles to FALL in Love With

The cooler air and shorter days of fall mean packing away sandals and sundresses and pulling out boots and sweaters. But a warmer wardrobe isn’t the only opportunity for a new look. Now that the heat of summer is finally dissipating, and pulling your hair off your neck doesn’t feel as critical, why not think about a new look and feel for those tresses?

We talked to Robert Sugden, hair artist in Sawgrass Village, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida about the fall looks he’s styling for his clients. Robert started out as a publicist for a jewelry company, but while working alongside hair, makeup, and wardrobe on jewelry photoshoots, he realized that what he really wanted was to go to beauty school.

“And I loved every moment, even though people said I would hate it,” he laughs. A big fan of Leonor Greyl products, Robert says, “I was introduced to Leonor Greyl when I was at the Andy LeCompte salon in LA. I fell madly in love because it works from the inside out, something I tell all my clients. I’ve seen such amazing results in hair repair and also texture change.”

His clients love the minimal feeling of products in their hair, and he notices that they are asking for hair products with no chemicals and light scents. Check, check, and check. “Leonor Greyl products sell themselves,” he says. “All I have to do is use them.”

Robert is particularly enthusiastic about the fall hairstyles this year. “Everything is reverting back to an easy, feminine style. Brigitte Bardot, Cindy Crawford, soft bobs, fringy, delicate. It’s going back to those eras.” He shared three looks he’s currently obsessed with for the season: the butterfly cut, a French bob, and a tousled lob.

But first…

Before styling any of his clients, Robert preps their hair with Leonor Greyl products, starting with L’Huile de Leonor Greyl. Once their tresses have absorbed the natural oils, vitamins, omegas, and antioxidants, he cleanses with a hydrating shampoo, either Bain Vitalisant B or Bain TS, depending on the hair’s needs, followed by his favorite conditioner, Crème Régénératrice. Sufficiently hydrated and treated, their locks are ready for the perfect cut and style.

Butterfly cut

This big, sexy look is the number one style with Robert’s long-haired clients. He starts with Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice and adds Algues et Fleurs before blowing dry. After setting rollers front to back, he sprays a little Voluforme spray all over the rollers and lets them sit for ten to fifteen minutes. When they come out, he works in Serum de Soie Sublimateur and breaks up the style with his fingers. For clients with thicker hair, Éclat Naturel replaces the serum. He then pulls the layers forward to meet the face frame, and voilà!

French bob

For Robert’s clients, “Along with the butterfly cut, this is the biggest thing right now. They’re opposite looks, and both very unique. The French bob is super cute and chic, and even charming with bangs, which are back in.”

This style starts with Lait Luminescence misted throughout the hair to give it softness. He also uses Algues et Fleurs for hold and to enhance the waves at the end. To achieve the look, he rough-dries most of the hair so that it is flat and soft, and then works with a brush to finish the drying. A flat iron adds soft, textured waves, and once he has movement, he uses Serum de Soie Sublimateur and breaks it all up with his fingers. At the end, to control frizz and have a sleeker root, he applies Baume Bois de Rose, rubbing it in his hands until it is very soft and then lightly gracing the top of the head with it.

Tousled waves

This soft, straight style with wavy ends is straight from the 2000s and should look like you woke up, shook your hair out, and rocked your day. It features a straight-across bang and doesn’t have too much movement or texture, just a very natural feel.

To achieve this, Robert goes back to a couple of his staple LG products. After working Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice through the hair, he sprays on Tonique Hydratant. While blow-drying, he takes big sections of hair, bends them, and blows the bend dry, giving a natural, lived-in, soft look. Baume Bois de Rose takes care of heavy flyaways.

“I’m loving the trends right now,” Robert says. “Those are my favorite styles: bouncy, gorgeous, va-va-va-voom hair.”

Whether you’re looking forward to fall or can’t accept that summer is ending, these looks will give you a refreshing start for the new season. Grab a pumpkin spice latte or your warm libation of choice and head to the salon!
