Our Commitments to You & the Planet

Sustainably-Sourced ingredients

Leonor and Jean-Marie Greyl founded Leonor Greyl in Paris in 1968 with a commitment to pampering clients’ hair and scalp with formulas made from the best botanical ingredients while treading lightly on the planet. This is a commitment that continues to be a cornerstone of the brand today. “The quality of our products is a priority,” says Caroline Greyl, President of the brand. “By being Made in France, we ensure rigorous product control and safety for the consumer.”

Leonor Greyl selects its raw materials from all over the world only after conducting extensive research into the most effective, sustainably harvested, Rainforest Certified, and organic botanicals, essential oils, and extracts. We also take into account the traceability of ingredients from our suppliers. “As much as possible, we shorten and optimize their routes by favoring nearby suppliers but of course without compromising on quality,” adds Leonor Greyl R&D director David Thomas Brooks.

You can see examples of this in every award-winning formula. For instance, we formulate many conditioners and masks with hydrating oils from babassu and the cupuaçu nuts collected in Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest. No deforestation is involved, and the harvest provides a livelihood for local communities.

“Ultimately, it’s a question of respecting the environment and doing our part to leave this a better place for our child and everyone else’s,” says David Thomas Brooks.

Green Packaging

All of Leonor Greyl’s products are packaged in recyclable materials, from our cardboard boxes to the glass and plastic containers. A key priority of the brand continues to be to reduce as much waste as possible.

Our cardboard packaging is FSC (Forest Support Council) certified, meaning it is sourced from responsibly managed forests. And our plastics are certified PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which can be recycled and used to manufacture a myriad of products – from new containers to fleece clothing to park benches.

Always innovating, Leonor Greyl is closely watching and eager for developments in biodegradable plastic packaging. Expect to hear more about plastics that break down into carbon dioxide instead of harmful micro-plastics.

Saving Our Seas

After several years of partnership with the Sea Cleaners Association, Leonor Greyl is proud to continue our commitment to protecting the planet by supporting the Fleur Australe initiative.

This extraordinary quest is led by Philippe Poupon, Géraldine Danon and their children aboard their sailboat of the same name. The sailboat travels the 4 corners of the world in order to better understand our planet and to raise awareness with children about the importance of protecting our oceans.

The Fleur Australe also offers helpful data to scientists from all over the world by providing unique measurements from the ocean. The sailboat is equipped with probes which allow readings of temperature, salinity, and through daily water samples and measurements. A camera is submerged at a depth of 30 cm makes it possible to identify floating waste areas.

Protecting the Pollinators

Bees are essential workers who keep our ecosystem alive, healthy, and sweet. A single colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day! But worldwide instances of colony collapse threaten to break a critical link in our food chain and biodiversity.

We proudly sponsor an organic apiary through Un Toit pour les Abeilles, an environmental organization that believes in protecting and preserving the bee population. We currently are fostering about 100 hives in France.

It’s just our small way of giving back. We owe it to the bees, whose golden honey is a key ingredient in our Shampooing Au Miel and Bain Traitant à la Propolis. Honey is a gentle, soothing, and antiseptic balm for scalps and especially dandruff conditions.

Education for our Future

In addition to our commitments to the planet, Leonor Greyl also invests in helping the children of our future.

For every Mousse Douceur Fleurs d’Oranger product sold we donate 2 € to Toutes à l’Ecole, an organization that provides high-level education to Cambodian girls in Phnom Penh. Founded in 2005 and chaired by former journalist Tina Kieffer, the association brings together a committed team to focus on helping these girls succeed in life.

Breast Cancer Support

No one should have to face breast cancer alone. Financial barriers, inequality in access to care, and inadequate support are all significant challenges for those affected by breast cancer. This is why Leonor Greyl partners with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which is dedicated and committed to serving those impacted by breast cancer. NBCF helps to fill in the gaps of cancer care through educational tools, early detection services, and support before, during and after a potential diagnosis.

Always Cruelty-Free

Leonor Greyl is honored to be awarded the prestigious Leaping Bunny certification, which celebrates our decades-long pledge to never test our products on animals.
The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics awards the Leaping Bunny certification to companies that promise not to test products on animals during any stage of development. A brands’ ingredient suppliers also make the same pledge. The designation is awarded only after a detailed review.

“Providing safe products that are natural and never tested on animals has been our family mission for over 50 years,” says Caroline Greyl. “Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary.”
