Every Day is Earth Day for LG

leonor greyl natural ingredients

April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Although celebrations will look very different around the globe this year because the coronavirus pandemic will keep many people indoors, Leonor Greyl is marking the occasion in our usual green-chic fashion.

Because every day is Earth Day for Leonor Greyl.

Leonor and Jean-Marie Greyl founded Leonor Greyl in Paris in 1968 with a commitment to nourishing clients’ hair with natural plant ingredients that are sustainably sourced and responsibly packaged in recyclable materials.

Their promise to honor the Earth has taken many shapes and evolved over the years, yet their dedication never wavered.

Now their eco-friendly legacy is carried by the next generation: daughter and company president Caroline Greyl and her husband Tom Brooks, who leads research and development.

“Ultimately, it’s a question of respecting the environment and doing our part to leave this a better place for our child and everyone else’s,” says Tom, a biologist and plant lover.

Leonor Greyl’s most recent eco-efforts include seeking out biodegradable plastics for packaging (news on that to come!), sponsoring The Sea Cleaners efforts to remove trash from our oceans, and seeking out raw sustainable, organic ingredients.

4 Hallmarks of Leonor Greyl’s Eco-Friendly Mission

Sustainably-sourced ingredients

Leonor Greyl is committed to finding ingredients that are sustainably sourced, Rainforest Certified, and organic as part of our earth-loving mission.

Examples include oils from the babassu nut, a nourishing and softening ingredient in our Soin Repigmentant line, and the cupuaçu nut, a thirst-quenching element in our Masque Quintessence.

Babassu and cupuaçu nuts are collected by villagers in the Amazonian rainforest in Brazil. No deforestation is involved, and the harvest benefits local economies.

Mongongo oil is another key Leonor Greyl ingredient, derived from a nut native to Africa and harvested by local communities in Namibia. You’ll find it in our best-selling L’Huile de Leonor Greyl oil, a pre-shampoo treatment for dry, over-processed hair.

In addition, a whole range of our hero oils – hazelnut, coconut, sunflower seed, sesame seed, and more – are organic certified.

We strongly believe that pesticide-free ingredients are not only healthier for our bodies, they are healthier for our planet. Organic farming reduces toxic air and water pollution, maintains healthy and nutritious soil, and supports pollinators like bees.

Green Packaging

All Leonor Greyl’s products are packaged in recyclable materials, from the cardboard boxes to the glass and plastic containers.

Moving forward, we are closely watching developments in biodegradable plastics, which have come a long way in recent years. Expect to hear more soon about oxo-biodegradables that fully break down into carbon dioxide in the environment.

“We might not be as fast as some brands to adopt new packaging technology, but if we are doing to do it, we’re going to do it right and make sure our product doesn’t break down into harmful micro-plastics,” Tom says.

Support for The Sea Cleaners

We are proudly partnering with the nonprofit Sea Cleaners, joining other high-profile sea-loving sponsors, including The Prince Albert II of the Monaco Foundation, the Oceanographic Institute and the Oceans Future Society run by the Cousteau family.

Leonor Greyl has donated at least € 25,000 to The Sea Cleaners “Manta” project – the development of the first seagoing vessel capable of collecting and processing large quantities of floating plastic waste.

The Manta’s innovative design includes three treadmills that will collect trash before it disintegrates in the oceans. Onboard sorters will compact the waste and transform it into energy to help feed the boat’s operation.

Its developers estimate the ship will be able to collect and store more than 250 tons of waste in its hulls until depositing it at recycling centers. A trial launch is set for 2022.

Buzzworthy Bees

Bees are essential workers who keep our ecosystem alive, healthy, and sweet. A single colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day! But worldwide instances of colony collapse are threatening to break a critical link in our food chain and biodiversity.

We proudly partnered with Beeopic, an environmental organization that believes in protecting and preserving the bee population. We currently are fostering about 100 hives in France.

It’s just our small way of giving back. We owe it to the bees, whose golden honey is a key ingredient in our Shampooing Au Miel and Bain Traitant à la Propolis. Honey is a gentle, soothing, and antiseptic balm for scalps and especially dandruff conditions.

At Leonor Greyl, we will always be inspired by nature and protecting our resources. To learn more about our passion for plants and a healthy environment, read our ingredients stories.
