Looking for fresh intel about the spring 2021 hairstyle trends, we called our resident expert to talk about cuts and colors emerging from the winter cold.

Leonor Greyl educator Kat Savano is a California-based stylist with 30 years industry experience and expertise in hair health and coloring. Kat slogged through the pandemic like the rest of us and is eager to welcome back clients who are long overdue for trims and color corrections. Many are craving big changes but aren’t sure which looks are hot.

That’s where Kat comes in with her insight about the top spring 2021 hairstyle trends and how-to tips using Leonor Greyl products.

“The overall aesthetic this spring is relaxed,” Kat says. “The pandemic changed my clients’ beauty regimes 100%. They want low-maintenance styles. Even bangs might take too much effort.”

For everyone whose new mantra is “effortless beauty,” read on to discover the top five trends Kat sees blossoming this spring.

Spring 2021 Hairstyle Trends

1. Romantic French Bob

Imagine a 1920s flapper-era cut with a 2021 twist. That’s this spring’s short and wavy bob trend, says Kat. It was all over the virtual red carpet at the recent Golden Globes Awards.

The jaw-length French bob is styled with soft waves, a side or middle part, fringe or no fringe. The haircut replaces last year’s longer beachy lob. The best thing about the French bob – besides that it looks chic on everyone – is it’s an easy hairstyle that looks beautiful when left to air dry.

Here’s how to give your bob that romantic French flair:

Prep: Wash with the Leonor Greyl shampoo that’s right for your texture. (Consult with LG’s Hair Concierge if you aren’t sure.) Kat recommends Bain Restructurant à la Banane, a light-weight volumizing shampoo that boosts buoyancy to all types of curls. The not-so-secret beauty ingredient is plantain extract for elasticity and shine. Follow shampooing with Crème de Soin à l’Amarante, a detangling conditioner enhanced with extract from the protein-packed amaranth seed.

Style: Mist damp hair with Algues et Fleurs leave-in curl enhancing spray. Then pump a penny-size amount of Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice into your hand and evenly distribute throughout your tresses. Scrunch or twist finger curls as the hair air dries. You can finish and set the style by applying a pearl-size amount of Eclat Naturel to the length and ends.

2. Transitional Bangs

After skipping salon appointments for months, many women have been growing out their 2020 curtain bangs, shaggy bangs, and baby bangs. The challenge now is coercing your in-between fringe to blend into the rest of your hairstyle.

A side-swept or textured curtain fringe is the easiest style to grow out, Kat says. If you have thick and choppy bangs, your stylist might suggest thinning and layering the hair without cutting it shorter so you don’t have a heavy band of hair cloaking your forehead and eyes.

Style: Baby those bangs! The key to success is not overheating and over-styling your irritating transitional wisps. Mistreatment will result in breakage, frizz, and fly-aways. So, before you blow-dry, protect your fringe with a mist of Condition Naturelle, LG’s heat-protecting styling spray and leave-in conditioner.

3. Glam (Not Grandma) Gray

If you ditched dying your grays this past year, you are not alone. Gray hair and ageless beauty are no longer considered antithetical.

“I have 15-20 clients right now who decided to grow out their color and embrace their natural color,” Kat says. “My job is to create the canvas that subtly and slowly takes them to the final hue they want.”

The dyed-to-natural journey often involves artistically blending in silver and charcoal highlights and low lights over several months. But some women opt for a fast transition, which can be a 10-hour affair of lightening and then adding back gray tones to match natural roots. Check out famed colorist Jack Martin’s Instagram to see some phenomenal one-day transitions on star clients like Sharon Osbourne and Jane Fonda.

Gray hair deserves some special care. Here’s what Kat recommends:

Prep: Wash with Shampooing Crème Moelle de Bambou, a luxurious shampoo enriched with silk proteins and bamboo extracts. It’s a must-have product for dry hair. Follow with Masque à l’Orchidée for deep conditioning. Apply it on towel-dried length and ends, leave on for 2-5 minutes, comb through, then rinse thoroughly. You also can use it as a weekly intensive treatment by applying it on dry length and ends for 20 minutes before shampooing.

To maintain your chic and shiny silver and not succumb to dull yellowing, swap out the Masque for Soin Repigmentant conditioner in Icy Blonde every second or third wash. Made with 96% natural ingredients, Soin Repigmentant includes coloring pigments that add subtle temporary highlights.

Style: Mist length and ends with Lait Luminescence Biphase, a leave-in detangling and protecting spray for thirsty and thick locks. It’s packed with beneficial plant extracts and botanical oils, including moringa seed and coconut. For shine and control, finish with Eclat Naturel or Sérum de Soie Sublimateur, which is infused with the softening properties of silk proteins. Both stylers minimize frizz without weighing down your strands.

4. Chopped

Remember how we said “effortless” is the big beauty word of 2021? Well, meet this spring’s easy-as-pie short hair trends.

Short shags, short bobs, pixie cuts, and natural texture with short curls and coils.

If you are going from long to short, you probably need some new styling tips. Here’s what Kat recommends:

Style: In your palm, mix a cocktail of Eclat Naturel styling serum and Baume Boise de Rose modeling balm. Apply a small quantity at the roots on damp or dry hair, lifting and shaping with your fingertips. The products are non-greasy and non-hardening. The delicate rosewood fragrance suits both men and women.

5. The Long and Short of It

We’d be remiss if we failed to mention certain other trends budding this spring, including the mullet, shag curtain bangs, spicy hues, and center parts.

Yes, center parts. According to Gen Zers on TikTok, side parts are for olds. (That means you, Gen X and Gen Y.) If you don’t believe us, just check out all those #MiddlePartChallenge vids on TikTok. The attack on the side part even spurred Vogue to run a full feature on how to properly part your hair and which tools to use. (Thanks for the Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice shout out, Vogue editors!)

If you want a smooth center part, here’s what Kat recommends in addition to LG’s mousse:

Prep: Wash with Shampooing au Miel for bounce, a gentle formula infused with acacia honey extracts and body-building proteins. Follow with Crème de Soin à l’Amarante, a detangling conditioner.

Style: Mist length and ends with Lait Luminescence Biphase, LG’s leave-in detangling and protecting spray. Finish with a few pumps of Sérum de Soie Sublimateur, which smooths hair and minimizes frizz without weighing it down. Kat and the rest of the LG education team look forward to sharing more 2021 hairstyle trends with you! Follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
